Use low settings while crossing empty sections.
Raise the setting only when several useful targets are within reach.
Drop it again after passing those targets.
Pause when the next milestone no longer looks realistic.

It won't make every roll land perfectly, of course. It does stop one poor stretch from wiping out a week's progress.

Let the album guide your spending
