Madden 27 Run Game Guide: How to Read Blocking Before You Snap
Running the ball in Madden 27 is stronger than ever, but many players still treat it like a guessing game. They call a run, snap the ball, and hope for the best. The problem is that this approach leaves too much to chance. The good news is that Madden 27 includes a useful feature that lets you preview your run blocking before the play starts. If you learn how to use it properly, you can turn bad runs into efficient gains and improve your offense dramatically.
The Secret Feature: Previewing Run Blocking
When you are on offense and call any run play, pressing L2 or LT reveals how the blocking will look before the snap. This is incredibly powerful because you can immediately see:
Who is blocked
Who is blocking whom
Which defenders are unaccounted for
Whether the run is likely to succeed
Instead of relying on instinct alone, you can make informed decisions based on the defensive alignment.
Example 1: Fixing an Unaccounted Defender
One situation described is a run against a 4-3 Even defense that is designed to go to the left. When the blocking is shown, the left corner is unaccounted for. That may not seem disastrous at first, but it can still affect the play.
A good adjustment is to use the untarget feature with the right analog stick. By placing the flame over the safety on the left, the receiver will block that corner instead. In this case, it is a better trade because if you are trying to get outside, having the corner blocked is often more useful than blocking the safety. This small change makes it much easier to get around the edge.
Example 2: Choosing the Better Direction
Sometimes the problem is not one player—it is the entire run direction. Against a 3-4 defense in Cover 4, a stretch run to the right may leave two defenders unblocked, which likely leads to a negative play.
But if you simply flip the run to the left, the blocking becomes much cleaner. There are no unaccounted-for players on that side, and the play can turn into a solid gain of around 10 yards. This shows how important it is to inspect the blocking before committing to the snap.
Example 3: Using Motion to Improve Blocking
If you want to keep the same run but improve the blocking, motion can help.
Against Zone Coverage
When the defense is in zone, motioning a player toward the side you are running can improve the blocking structure. In the example, motioning a receiver across the formation helps account for the corner and creates a better running lane, turning a no-gain situation into a 5-6 yard run.
Against Man Coverage
Against man coverage, motion should usually go away from the run side. Why? Because defenders typically follow in man. Motioning a player away can pull a defender out of the play entirely, making the run much easier. This can create “free yards” right up the middle.
Example 4: Mid Zone vs. Inside Zone
The final major lesson is about run selection. Sometimes the problem is not blocking adjustments—it is the wrong play call.
The mid zone is highlighted as one of the most versatile runs in the game. It can be cut inside, bounced outside, or adjusted depending on the look. Compared to inside zone, which is more direct and limited, mid zone gives you more flexibility.
Inside zone is mostly designed to hit right behind the center. If the defense shuts that lane down, the play becomes difficult. Mid zone, however, offers more options and better adaptability.
Final Thoughts
The run game in Madden 27 is not just about calling random plays. It is about reading the defense, previewing blocking, and making smart adjustments. Whether you use untargeting, motion, or simply choose a better run concept, this feature gives you a major edge. If you want to run the ball more effectively, spend time labbing these ideas and learning how each play behaves. In the Saints playbook especially, there are several strong shotgun runs worth mastering.
